Setup Steps

  1. 1SPF: add include:mail.zendesk.com to the SPF record of your support email domain. Zendesk recommends v=spf1 include:mail.zendesk.com -all
  2. 2DKIM: add two CNAME records, zendesk1._domainkey pointing to zendesk1._domainkey.zendesk.com and zendesk2._domainkey pointing to zendesk2._domainkey.zendesk.com
  3. 3Wait for the CNAME records to propagate before the next step
  4. 4In Admin Center, go to Channels > Talk and email > Email and enable the custom domain for DKIM
  5. 5Allow up to 48 hours for the green checkmark in Zendesk

Last step: publish a DMARC record. It sends you a daily report of every message sent as your domain, including the ones from Zendesk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put include:mail.zendesk.com inside another include?

No. Zendesk requires include:mail.zendesk.com in the first-layer lookup of your SPF record, not nested inside another include. A redirect: and SPF macros are also supported.

Why must I add the CNAME records before enabling DKIM in Zendesk?

Zendesk asks you to complete the steps in order to prevent delivery failures. Email that is not signed or is improperly signed can be delayed or rejected, or reach users with a caution message.
